Simple support for babies, toddlers & new parents

Toilet Learning

A calm, child-led guide to readiness, wee and poo learning, accidents, constipation, childcare coordination, night dryness and when to seek help.

Start here

Quick summary

The calm version

Toilet learning usually goes best when readiness leads. Most toddlers show readiness between about 18 months and 3 years, but timing varies. Accidents are part of learning, poo can take longer than wee, and daytime dryness usually comes before night dryness. Pausing is not failure.

ReadinessSkills and body signs matter more than age alone.
SetupSecure sitting and supported feet help.
CalmPressure and shame can make toileting harder.
PooSoft, painless poo is a foundation.
SupportSeek help early if painful, stuck or stressful.

What matters most

  • Use readiness as the guide. Healthdirect says there is no exact age and signs usually appear between 18 months and 3 years. [1]
  • Accidents are practice data. Use neutral clean-up and avoid punishment, shame or comparisons.
  • Constipation can block progress. Painful poo can lead to withholding and soiling. [4][5]
  • Night dryness is a separate developmental step and can take much longer. [2][3]
  • Seek support for pain, constipation, blood, urinary symptoms, soiling, regression, developmental concerns or if family life is becoming stuck around toileting.
